Reputations:

What the public thinks they know

When traveling through Amber and its most often affiliated realms (Rebma, Golden Circle realms, etc.) it's hard to avoid picking up information on the local celebrities: the Amberites. New and old: ballads, tales, histories, gossip, general hearsay, etc., it just seems to increase with time. When actually trying to gain the such information there is a problem. The stories tend to become a bit mix, and/or contradictory, as people's memories, impressions, and opinions tend to interfere with events and those involved.

In the "In the Dark" game-verse what is publicly known/believed about people is their reputations. There are five basic categories that an individual can have a reputation for: Kindness, Honesty, Cunning, Libido, and Martial Skill. In each category a persons reputation can be either positively, or negatively, viewed. How accurate a reputation is, is a matter of personal opinion and belief. After all Brand may have always been a really sweet guy to you personally, but he has a rep for cruelty. Either general opinion is wrong (do to lack of info), or Brand was deceiving you for some reason.

Kindness-Represents how friendly, gentlemanly/ladylike, polite, harmless, etc. a person is reputed to be (Vialle).

Cruelty-Is a measure of a negative kindness rep. People like this are reputed to be mean, spiteful, cruel, heartless etc. (Brand and Oberon)

Honesty-The more one is reputed to have , the more likely people are to believe them. This doesn't mean someone with a honesty has not lied, it just means they have not been caught. Or the few people who do know about the lie don't, won't, or can't mention it. (Gerard).

Dishonesty-Shows that this person a negative honesty and is reputed to be untrustworthy and is believed to have broken their word. (Brand)

Cunning-People have the reputation of being wily, good poker faces, tacticians, hard to deceive etc. With a high rep for cunning someone without much skill could avoid most challenges (that he'd probably fail anyway) simply because others think the rep is accurate and are to nervous to challenge it. (Oberon)

Naive-Folks a negative cunning are reputed to be a dupe, easily fooled, gets lost in own home, etc. Of course if they are as naive as everyone thinks, they tend to be in positions of secret power. (Morganth).

Libido-Represents a persons reputed charisma, sexual magnetism, physical stamina, active sex life, etc. (Deirdre).

Celibacy-Most Amberites are attractive, but not all of them broadcast it, or necessarily have known about sexual activity. People with a negative Libido reputation are considered awkward, celibate, unsatisfying, frigid, impotent, etc. (Dworkin).

Martial Skill-People have reputations for physical competence as fighters in any regard (swordsman, wrestler, bowman, etc.) Since swordplay tends to be more respected in Amber, swordsman generally have higher rep.'s than other martial artists. (Benedict)

Untrained-Is the negative aspect of being Skilled and others believe such people to be untrained, no threat, dangerous to themselves, clumsy, etc. (Castle Page).

"In the Dark" currently most predominant figures reputations are ranked as follows. These reputations are the average opinions of the people in/around Amber. An individuals opinions may vary dramatically from those below.

Note: The Flora of "In the Dark" is based on the Flora actually seen in the Corwin chronicles. She wears large, unnecessary glasses, dresses very conservatively, and does not like partying. The only reason that she doesn't have a negative Libido ranking is because, in this game, she has had a child. [in this game-verse Deirdre was the bombshell]

Things

There is one last type of reputation. It's a reputation for having ownership of a famous object. Essentially the object's reputation becomes associated with its owner.

Examples: Corwin and Greyswandir. Bleys and Weirwendel [read his Trump description]. Morgan and Aermicil. The King of Amber and the Jewel. Ian and the Patternroom Key. Armond and his instant roses. Julian and his armor and Morgenstern. Gerard and The Rilga (his ship). Dara and Oberon's signet. A very skilled few have been awarded Benedicts Silver Star for exemplary service. And so on.
